Water was running; children were running
You were running out of time
Under the mountain, a golden fountain
Were you praying at the lares shrine?
But oh your city lies in dust, my friend
We found you hiding we found you lying
Choking on the dirt and sand
Your former glories and all the stories
Dragged and washed with eager hands
—Siouxsie And The Banshees, Cities in Dust

In Potter Valley a baby oak sprouts up in the middle of where this truck's engine used to be. The paint is covered in lichen and the body has become a habitat for who knows how many small animals, bugs, and worms.
As meticulous as I am about recycling and sustainability, the other half of my brain says not to worry too much because nature can take care of herself. It's egotistical of humankind to think we have so much power over nature that it needs to be saved by us. (But, of course that doesn't mean we should recklessly trash the place and needlessly kill off thousands of entire species. We still have to live and eat here.)
This truck may take forever in human years to turn back into earth, but in Earth's timeline, it's just a small moment.

At a park in Santa Rosa these twin girls were not there to toss bread to the ducks and geese. The twins were sneaking up in order to better throw rocks as hard as they could from close range. Luckily, water fowl are well protected by thick layers of feathers and down. I just can't believe the parents stood by and let the girls do this.

10/08 Nearly Home. At a stop-sign in south-eastern Sonoma County, California.
(The Westward series was taken while driving from Michigan to California in October. I'm going to post them three at a time, in no particular order and will try to mention if I remember what state it was taken in. The majority of these photos were snapped while driving 80 miles per hour on interstate 80 so will be blurry, have dirt specks or water droplets from the day it rained, or have a slightly-tinted-car-window look. Don't worry, I rarely shoot while at the wheel, so most likely, they were taken while Donovan was driving, after I had done my share for the day.)

10/08 It's a quick decent from the Sierra Mountains into California's central valley. The flat part up ahead with all the overpasses is Sacramento.

10/07 This shot from I-80 in Wyoming could have had a lot more cars in it. Drive-by photography is hit-or-miss but mostly, it's miss. Though, I do like that hill!

Overlooking I-80, west of Cheyenne, Wyoming, on Sherman Hill, the highest point on the Lincoln Highway, is this great statue of Lincoln's head. We stopped here to rest a moment after a difficult climb for my little burdened Honda.

We pulled off I-80 to take a break and look at the view. I found this a ways off the side of a road behind a strip-mall. This is one of the few shots I took while stopped.

When snapping photos in a moving vehicle, so much of what I catch is random. When I look at them later I find little surprises such as the billboard and the double reflections in this photo.
The sun sets on our longest day of driving. We got stuck in traffic twice while passing through Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa, finally stopping in Omaha, Nebraska.
